Why our tea farms?

Why our tea farms? -

We work directly with three small, family-run tea farms in Japan - two based in Wazuka (Uji) and one in Kirishima (Kagoshima). These aren’t just suppliers, they’re long-term partners we know personally and collaborate with closely. Each farm brings something different to what we do, but all share our values around sustainability, transparency, and total commitment to quality.

One of our partner farms in Wazuka has worked with us closely to develop a completely custom matcha blend, combining three different cultivars into one unique ceremonial grade tea (the Three Cultivar Blend) exclusively made for us and not available anywhere else. Our second Uji farm is focused on producing exceptional, single-cultivar matcha (Limited Release Matcha). Their attention to detail is second to none, and we’ll be showcasing limited seasonal offerings from them throughout the year.

In Kirishima, our third partner has gone the extra mile by achieving full organic certification (Certified Organic Matcha). Their matcha is grown in pristine conditions with absolutely no pesticides or synthetic inputs - just clean, nutrient-rich tea that reflects their deep respect for the land and the process.

All of our matcha is shade-grown for four weeks, harvested only in the first flush of spring, and stone-milled using traditional techniques. While it’s a time- and labor-intensive approach, it’s the only way to ensure the depth of flavor, creamy texture, vibrant color, and maximum nutritional benefit.

Even our labels are printed locally near our farms, because supporting small-scale, local enterprise is just as important to us as the tea itself. From farm to cup, every step is intentional and always rooted in quality, community, and care.

Why the Uji region?

Why the Uji region? -

We had purposely chose to source our matcha from Uji, Japan, due to the region's unmatched reputation for producing the highest quality matcha in the world. Uji’s unique climate, geography, and centuries of tea cultivation tradition create the perfect conditions for growing superior matcha.

Located just south of Kyoto, Uji benefits from a temperate climate with consistent rainfall and misty conditions. This combination, along with naturally mineral-rich soil, provides the ideal environment for nurturing tea plants. One of the most critical factors is Uji's perfect balance of sun exposure due to the hilly and mountinous environment. Matcha leaves are shaded for several weeks before harvest, which encourages the plants to produce more chlorophyll and amino acids, enhancing both the flavor and nutritional profile of the tea. The result is a vibrant, rich green powder packed with antioxidants and nutrients that help promote energy, focus, and overall well-being.

Uji has been a center of tea production since the 12th century, with an unparalleled history of matcha cultivation. The expertise passed down through generations of tea farmers has perfected the process, from handpicking only the finest leaves to delicate stone grinding. This heritage of quality is why Uji matcha is considered the gold standard, with unmatched umami flavor and vibrant color.

While other regions in Japan also produce matcha, Uji's combination of ideal growing conditions and centuries of expertise sets it apart. By choosing Uji matcha, we ensure that our customers receive a product that not only tastes exceptional but also delivers maximum nutritional benefits, staying true to our own love for matcha.

Why the Kirishima region?

Why the Kirishima region? -

We chose to source our Certified Organic Matcha from the Kirishima region in Kagoshima, Japan, because of its pristine natural environment, rich volcanic soil, and dedication to organic farming practices. Nestled in the southernmost part of Japan’s main islands, Kirishima offers a unique terroir that makes it ideal for cultivating high-quality, organic matcha.

Kirishima is known for its pure air, abundant rainfall, and mineral-rich soil, thanks to its proximity to the volcanic mountains that surround the region. These conditions create a nutrient-dense environment for tea plants to thrive without the need for synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. The area’s cool mountain mists naturally shade the tea leaves during their growing period, helping to boost the production of chlorophyll and L-theanine. This results in a bright, vibrant green matcha with a smooth, mellow flavor and a clean, refreshing finish.

While Kagoshima is a rising star in Japan’s tea scene, Kirishima has quickly earned a reputation for producing some of the finest organic matcha available today. Generations of farmers in the region have embraced sustainable practices, maintaining the integrity of their land and tea through careful handpicking and meticulous processing.

  • Purchased another tin again since I love the quality of the matcha so much. I've tried matcha from other stores over the last 5 years but honestly Zenergi has very quickly become my favourite out of them all! I genuinely look forward to drinking my matcha even more now.
